Why Is My Graph Paper Printing Too Small?
If a 5mm grid measures 4.7mm after printing, the graph paper file is usually not the problem. The print dialog probably scaled the page down to fit printer margins or a mismatched paper size.
The most likely cause
Your PDF is being printed with Fit to page, Shrink to printable area, or a custom scale below 100%. Turn those off and print at Actual Size or 100%.
First, check the print scale
Open the print dialog and look for a setting named Page Sizing, Scale, Size, or More settings. The exact label depends on the app. You want Actual Size, 100%, or No scaling.
Avoid Fit, Fit to printable area, Shrink oversized pages, and browser options that automatically resize the page. These settings are useful for text documents, but they ruin measured graph paper.
Good settings
- Actual Size
- Scale: 100%
- No scaling
- Centered page
Settings to avoid
- Fit to page
- Shrink to printable area
- Scale below 100%
- Borderless auto-enlarge
Second, check whether you printed A4 on Letter paper
A4 and US Letter are close enough to look interchangeable on screen, but they are not the same size. If you print an A4 PDF on Letter paper, many apps shrink the page. If you print a Letter PDF on A4 paper, the app may also resize or shift it.
Choose the template that matches the paper in the printer tray: A4 5mm graph paper for A4 paper, or Letter 1/4 inch graph paper for US Letter paper.
Third, avoid printing from a web page when accuracy matters
Browser print dialogs can add headers, footers, page margins, and automatic scaling. If you only need a quick note page, browser printing is fine. If the physical square size matters, download the PDF and print the PDF file directly.
Use a ruler test before printing more copies
Print one page and measure a known distance. Do not judge by eye. A page scaled to 96% still looks like graph paper, but the grid is wrong.
| Template | What to measure | Correct result |
|---|---|---|
| 5mm graph paper | 10 spaces | 50mm |
| 1cm graph paper | 10 spaces | 10cm |
| 1/4 inch graph paper | 4 spaces | 1 inch |
If the page is still small
Check the printer driver after checking the app. Some printers have their own scaling options in a second dialog. Also avoid borderless printing unless you know the driver does not enlarge or shift the page.
